Rodri Relishes City Return Despite Late Chelsea Draw

Rodri described his return to full fitness as a personal victory, even as Manchester City’s Premier League title push suffered a setback following a dramatic 1-1 draw against Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium. The midfielder was making his first start since October and delivered a composed performance in a match that slipped away from City in stoppage time.

The Spaniard has endured a long and difficult recovery after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in September 2024, an absence that kept him sidelined for most of the past 16 months. His comeback was further complicated by muscle issues, making Sunday’s appearance a significant milestone in his journey back to regular football.

“For me it is a gift. What I have been through has been terrible for me so winning, drawing, losing for me right now everything is a gift,” said the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner. He added, “To play, have the joy of the game and recover the smile, and the rest will come. The victories, the successes for the team. Right now it’s about staying fit and enjoying football.”

How did the Chelsea draw affect Manchester City?

City appeared on course for three points after dominating the first half. Erling Haaland struck the post, Phil Foden missed a clear chance, and Tijjani Reijnders eventually put Pep Guardiola’s side ahead. However, defensive injuries to Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias after the break disrupted City’s rhythm and control.

Chelsea, playing without a permanent manager following Enzo Maresca’s departure, grew into the game and capitalised late on. Enzo Fernandez scored in the 94th minute to leave City six points behind league leaders Arsenal.

“First half was brilliant, enough to score three or four goals,” Rodri said. “In the second half we forgot a little bit how to play and they got control of the game.”

What did Rodri say about his fitness and form?

Reflecting on his physical condition, Rodri explained the challenge of rebuilding confidence and sharpness. “I went through the process of where you have to adjust the body in terms of the muscle. I feel strong. I need the rhythm of the games but for the moment of the season we are in and where I came from I feel good.”

Despite the frustration of dropped points, Rodri’s return offers City renewed belief as they navigate the final stretch of the season.
