Gabon Bans Aubameyang as Government Suspends National Team After AFCON Exit

Gabon’s sports ministry has taken drastic action following the national football team’s disappointing Africa Cup of Nations campaign, announcing the banning of veteran players Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bruno Ecuele Manga, the suspension of the entire national team, and the dismissal of the coaching staff. The decision came after the Panthers endured a disastrous tournament marked by three straight defeats.

The breaking point came on Wednesday when an injury-time winner by Bazoumana Toure handed Gabon a painful 3-2 loss to defending champions Ivory Coast. That result sealed Gabon’s fate in Group F, where they finished bottom of the table behind Ivory Coast, Cameroon, and Mozambique. The outcome shocked fans and officials alike, given the expectations placed on the team heading into the tournament.

Speaking on Gabonese television late Wednesday, sports minister Simplice-Desire Mamboula confirmed the government’s response.
“Given the Panthers’ disgraceful performance at the AFCON, the government has decided to dissolve the technical staff, suspend the national team until further notice, and remove players Bruno Ecuele Manga and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang,” he said.

The announcement sparked immediate reaction across the country and online. Hours after it was first aired, the video clip was removed from the ministry’s official platforms and the broadcaster’s online channels, before being reposted on Thursday. The brief removal only added to the controversy surrounding the decision.

Why did Gabon suspend the national team after AFCON?

The suspension followed a review by the Council of Ministers after Gabon’s 3-2 defeat to Mozambique, a team ranked 102nd in the world. That loss confirmed Gabon’s elimination from the tournament and highlighted what officials described as deeper structural issues within the national team setup.

President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema addressed the situation in an official statement released on Wednesday, expressing concern about the wider impact of the team’s performance.
“This has weakened part of our national identity,” he said.
“The national team highlights two major problems: the lack of method and the dispersion of resources,” he added.

The president went on to promise firm changes, saying the government would take “strong and structural decisions” aimed at restoring discipline, accountability, and ambition in national sports governance. His remarks framed the suspension not just as punishment, but as a reset meant to rebuild confidence and standards.

What does Aubameyang’s ban mean for Gabon football?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remains one of Gabon’s most recognisable football figures, and his removal from the national team marks a significant shift. The striker returned to his French club Marseille after the Mozambique defeat due to a thigh knock, but his absence has now become permanent under the current decision.

Alongside the ban of Aubameyang and Ecuele Manga, the dismissal of the coaching staff signals a complete overhaul of the national team structure. While some supporters have welcomed the tough stance, others have questioned whether government intervention could create further complications.

There is also concern that the move may attract sanctions from FIFA, which strictly prohibits government interference in the affairs of its member football associations. Any violation of these rules could place Gabon at risk of international penalties, potentially affecting future competitions.

As Gabon grapples with the fallout from its AFCON exit, the suspension has placed the country’s football future under intense scrutiny. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the bold measures lead to meaningful reform or deepen the crisis facing the Panthers.
