Gary Neville Slams Manchester United Performance After Wolves Draw

Gary Neville has delivered one of his harshest assessments yet of Manchester United after their disappointing draw with Wolves, describing the performance as a new low in an already troubled season. The former United captain did not hold back as he reacted to a match that should have lifted the club into the Premier League top four but instead exposed ongoing issues in form, tactics, and confidence.

Manchester United entered the Old Trafford fixture knowing a win would push them into fourth place. Wolves, on the other hand, arrived bottom of the table with just two points from 18 matches and without a single league victory. Despite that contrast, United failed to assert control and were held to a 1-1 draw that ended Wolves’ run of 11 consecutive defeats.

Neville’s verdict was blunt and unforgiving. “That was the baddest of the bad that,” he said on the Gary Neville podcast. His criticism went beyond the result and focused on the overall display, which he felt lacked direction, urgency, and quality. He also highlighted the reaction of the supporters at full-time as a clear signal of growing frustration. “They weren’t just booed off at full-time. The fans waited in the stadium to continue to boo them. They’ve gone backwards.”

United were fortunate not to lose the match, with goalkeeper Senne Lammens making two crucial saves that kept them level. Wolves cancelled out Joshua Zirkzee’s deflected opener through a Ladislav Krejci header just before half-time, shifting momentum and confidence toward the visitors.

This draw followed a narrow 1-0 home win against Newcastle on Boxing Day, a match where United showed resilience despite missing several key players. Captain Bruno Fernandes, Harry Maguire, and Matthijs de Ligt were all sidelined through injury, while three others were away at the Africa Cup of Nations. That context made the Wolves performance even more frustrating, as Neville believed the team had shown signs of improvement only days earlier.

Why did Gary Neville call this Manchester United display unacceptable?

Neville’s frustration was rooted in what he saw as a lack of progress under head coach Ruben Amorim. United had reverted to a 3-4-3 formation against Wolves after using a back four against Newcastle, a decision that quickly drew scrutiny. Neville questioned the logic behind the early tactical shift and felt it unsettled the team rather than helping it.

“This isn’t right. I’ve watched enough of United over the last five or six weeks to know what looks right and what isn’t right,” Neville said on Sky Sports. He pointed to the early return to a back three as a turning point. “When I see that we go back (to three at the back) after five minutes tonight and I’m thinking, no, Ruben, why have you done that? The manager has to look at that and think, I got that wrong. I complicated it.”

The criticism reflected a broader concern that United are overthinking games instead of simplifying their approach. Neville suggested that frequent tactical changes are preventing players from settling into a rhythm, which in turn affects confidence and decision-making on the pitch.

Did Ruben Amorim’s substitutions make the situation worse?

Neville was equally critical of Amorim’s in-game decisions, particularly the substitutions made during the match. Joshua Zirkzee was withdrawn at half-time and replaced by 18-year-old Jack Fletcher, who was making only his third senior appearance. Amorim later described the change as “just tactical,” but Neville strongly disagreed with both the timing and the reasoning.

“They made Manchester United worse. Every single substitution was bizarre,” Neville said. He went further by questioning the logic behind removing Zirkzee if there was no injury involved. “If Zirkzee wasn’t injured and that was a tactical substitution, it was a really poor one.”

While Neville was clear that Zirkzee is not a finished product, he stressed the importance of experience and physical presence in a game that required control. “Zirkzee isn’t Eric Cantona, by any stretch of the imagination, but he needed to be out there for physicality, for presence, for experience.”

The Wolves draw has intensified pressure on Amorim and raised fresh doubts about United’s direction. For fans aged 18 to 35 who have grown up expecting competitiveness and identity from the club, performances like this feel increasingly disconnected from that tradition. Neville’s words captured a growing sense that Manchester United are not just struggling for results, but also losing clarity in how they want to play.
