Manchester City avoided a major setback after Phil Foden delivered a last-minute winner in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Leeds on Saturday. City had blown a two-goal lead at the Etihad Stadium, and the pressure was building as the match headed toward stoppage time. The win pushed Pep Guardiola’s side into second place, four points behind leaders Arsenal ahead of their Sunday clash against Chelsea.
City entered the match needing a response after consecutive defeats to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen. Guardiola’s heavy rotation in the Champions League had led to a 2-0 loss and sparked criticism, with the manager saying his players “didn’t try”. Against Leeds, he restored Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Bernardo Silva and Gianluigi Donnarumma to the starting team, creating a more familiar selection for a must-win league match.
City got off to the perfect start, taking only 59 seconds to score. Foden converted from close range after Matheus Nunes broke through the Leeds defence. Leeds struggled to cope with City’s tempo, and in the 25th minute, Josko Gvardiol extended the lead with a simple finish following Nico O’Reilly’s headed pass. Leeds protested that Silva was offside and obstructing Lucas Perri, but a VAR check confirmed the goal.
How Did Leeds Fight Back?
Leeds shifted the momentum early in the second half. Dominic Calvert-Lewin stepped off the bench and immediately punished a sloppy mistake by Nunes, scoring a precise finish in the 49th minute. The visitors grew in confidence and continued pressing for an equaliser.
Their breakthrough came in the 68th minute when Gvardiol fouled Calvert-Lewin in the box. Lukas Nmecha saw his penalty saved by Donnarumma, but he reacted fastest to fire in the rebound, completing Leeds’ comeback and stunning the home crowd.
How Did Man City Secure the Win Late On?
City continued to push forward, though Erling Haaland was unusually quiet as he chased his 100th Premier League goal. Instead, Foden stepped up once more during stoppage time. He created space cleverly inside the area before slotting home the decisive goal, giving City a hard-fought win and offering Guardiola a moment of relief after a tense second half.
Elsewhere in the league, Brentford striker Igor Thiago extended his tally to 11 goals this season with a brace in a 3-1 victory over Burnley. Sunderland also produced a standout comeback, overturning a two-goal deficit to beat Bournemouth 3-2 and climb to fourth place. Newcastle’s visit to Everton and Tottenham’s home match against Fulham wrapped up the day’s fixtures.
Manchester City’s win keeps them firmly in the title race, but the match also highlighted how quickly momentum can shift in the Premier League as teams fight for form, survival and momentum in the weeks ahead.
