Liverpool’s season took another painful turn after a 3-0 home defeat to Nottingham Forest added to their growing woes, while Chelsea strengthened their title push with a composed 2-0 win at Burnley. The contrast in momentum defined the weekend as both sides moved in sharply different directions.
How Did Liverpool’s Struggles Deepen So Quickly?
Liverpool fell behind in the 33rd minute when Murillo struck powerfully after a failed clearance from Elliot Anderson’s corner. Arne Slot was furious that the goal stood, pointing to Forest’s Dan Ndoye appearing to obstruct Alisson Becker. His frustration grew in comparison to Virgil van Dijk’s disallowed goal in their 3-0 defeat to Manchester City before the international break.
The second blow arrived just after halftime. Sean Dyche’s side pushed further ahead when Nicolo Savona finished from Neco Williams’ clever cut-back. Forest wrapped up the result in the 78th minute as Morgan Gibbs-White scored from a rebound after Omari Hutchinson’s shot was saved.
Liverpool have now lost eight of their last 11 matches across all competitions, including six of their last seven in the league. This marks their first instance of consecutive league defeats by a three-goal margin since 1965. Slot acknowledged that the squad is still processing the tragic loss of Diogo Jota, saying their energy and sharpness have not returned.
Despite their £400 million summer investment, Liverpool sit 11th, eight points behind leaders Arsenal. New signing Alexander Isak, brought in for a British record fee, was substituted in the second half of his fourth Premier League start. He has yet to score in the competition.
Slot summed up the performance by saying, “Another big disappointment. We started off quite well but we conceded the 1-0 and weren’t able to play the way we did in the first half hour. If things go well or things go bad, it’s my responsibility. We weren’t able to create enough. I tried to adjust a few things, but it didn’t work out. We are in a very bad spell.”
Can Chelsea Maintain Their Strong Title Momentum?
Chelsea continued their surge toward the top of the table with a confident win at Turf Moor. Pedro Neto opened the scoring with a diving header just before halftime, and Enzo Fernandez sealed the result late in the match. Enzo Maresca’s team has now won eight of their last ten games, a strong run that lifted them to second place, three points behind Arsenal.
Saturday marked Maresca’s 50th Premier League match in charge, and the victory served as a timely boost ahead of a demanding week. Chelsea now prepare for home clashes against Barcelona in the Champions League and Arsenal in the league on November 30.
Reflecting on the performance, Maresca said, “It’s tough after the international break, 12:30, Burnley away, it’s always a hard game. But the way we competed I’m very happy. It was very important to keep the momentum from before the international break.”
Elsewhere, Rob Edwards’ first match in charge of Wolves ended in a 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace. Daniel Munoz and Yeremy Pino scored the goals that kept Wolves bottom of the table and nine points from safety. Brighton put together a comeback to beat Brentford 2-1, while Raul Jimenez’s late strike handed Fulham a 1-0 win over Sunderland. West Ham, meanwhile, let go of a two-goal lead in their 2-2 draw against Bournemouth.
Both Liverpool and Chelsea now face defining stretches in their seasons, with one side fighting to rescue form and the other working to stay firmly in the title race.
