The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has highlighted a disturbing rise in violent robberies involving individuals who are tricked through online dating apps and social media interactions. According to the agency, both Kenyan citizens and foreign nationals are being targeted after forming connections with strangers who later invite them to meet in private or unfamiliar locations.

“Tragically, these gatherings frequently culminate in ambushes, robberies, and, in some cases, physical assaults,” said the DCI. This pattern has pushed the agency to warn the public about the growing risks tied to digital relationships, especially when personal information is shared too freely.

How are fraudsters targeting victims on dating platforms?

The DCI reports that criminals are taking advantage of emotional connections built online to gain access to sensitive personal details. Many victims unknowingly share private information, including financial data, which later puts them at greater risk.

“To ensure your safety, it is crucial to protect your personal information. Avoid sharing any sensitive details, particularly financial information, with individuals you’ve only met online. Fraudsters are particularly skilled at creating emotional connections, which they then exploit to extract personal data that could lead to financial or personal harm,” the agency added.

Users are encouraged to take time verifying the identities of the people they interact with and pay attention to inconsistencies in stories or profiles that seem too perfect. The DCI also stresses the importance of avoiding any form of personal or financial disclosure when dealing with strangers online.

For in-person meetups, the agency advises choosing safe and public locations such as cafés, restaurants, or shopping centres. Private residences and secluded spots should be avoided. Individuals are also encouraged to inform a trusted friend or family member about their plans, share their live location when possible, and ensure their phone stays fully charged.

The DCI further urges the public to walk away and seek help immediately if they feel unsafe or notice suspicious behaviour at any point during an online or physical interaction.
