Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid Return to Anfield Reminds Liverpool of Their Missing Spark

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return to Anfield with Real Madrid has stirred strong emotions among Liverpool supporters still adjusting to life without one of their most beloved homegrown stars. Both the player and his former club appear to be struggling to fully adapt to their new realities since his emotional exit last summer.

Just outside Anfield, a massive mural still depicts Alexander-Arnold in the iconic Liverpool red alongside the words: “I’m just a normal lad from Liverpool whose dream has just come true.” That statement once symbolized his fairytale rise from academy prodigy to Premier League and Champions League winner. Today, however, it stands as a bittersweet reminder of what Liverpool lost when their local hero decided to move to Real Madrid.

Why Did Trent Alexander-Arnold Leave Liverpool?

After years of speculation about his future, Alexander-Arnold’s decision to let his contract run down left Liverpool fans divided. The club received only a nominal fee when he joined Real Madrid, despite his status as one of the most influential full-backs in modern football.

For some fans, the manner of his departure tarnished his legacy. During his final months at Anfield, the same crowd that once celebrated him as the “Scouser in our team” occasionally booed him, reflecting a complicated relationship between admiration and disappointment.

When he finally announced his decision to leave in May, the 27-year-old described it as “easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.” Ahead of his emotional return to Anfield as a visiting player, Alexander-Arnold admitted that he has “mixed emotions” about facing Liverpool.

“No matter what, my feelings won’t change towards Liverpool,” he told Amazon Prime. “I’ve got memories there that will last me a lifetime and, no matter how I’m received, that won’t change.” He added that while he will not celebrate if he scores, he understands that the fans are free to react however they feel.

How Much Are Liverpool Missing Trent Alexander-Arnold?

Beyond the emotions surrounding his exit, Alexander-Arnold’s absence has left a noticeable gap in Liverpool’s performance. New manager Arne Slot has been forced to reshuffle his squad to cover the right-back position, with midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai frequently dropping deeper to fill in. Neither Conor Bradley nor Jeremie Frimpong has managed to replicate the creativity and consistency Alexander-Arnold provided on the right flank.

While critics often questioned his defensive positioning, the Englishman’s attacking impact was undeniable. He left Liverpool as the defender with the most assists in Premier League history, thanks to his pinpoint crosses, creative vision, and dangerous set pieces. His chemistry with Mohamed Salah was particularly crucial; without Alexander-Arnold’s overlapping runs and precision delivery, Salah has found it harder to influence games.

Liverpool’s recent slump, losing six of their last eight matches, has exposed just how integral their former right-back was to the team’s rhythm and attacking fluidity.

Struggles in Madrid

Life at Real Madrid has not unfolded as smoothly as Alexander-Arnold might have hoped. He picked up a hamstring injury during Madrid’s Champions League opener against Marseille on September 16 and has not featured since. Despite recovering, he has found himself behind Federico Valverde in the pecking order, even with Dani Carvajal sidelined.

Last weekend, he was an unused substitute in Madrid’s 2–1 El Clasico win over Barcelona, as coach Xabi Alonso opted to maintain a stable defensive lineup. With Madrid leading La Liga and boasting three wins from three in the Champions League, there is little reason for Alonso to alter a winning formula.

The lack of game time has also hurt Alexander-Arnold’s international prospects. He has missed out on Thomas Tuchel’s last two England call-ups, an unexpected setback for a player once viewed as one of England’s brightest talents.

Part of his motivation for joining Real Madrid was reportedly to boost his chances of winning individual accolades such as the Ballon d’Or. However, early signs suggest that success in Spain will not come easily.
