Michael Olunga Breaks Silence After Being Dropped from Harambee Stars Squad

Michael Olunga has finally spoken out after being left out of the Harambee Stars squad for the November international friendlies. The Kenyan captain, who has been a consistent figure in the national team since 2015, was a notable absentee in Benni McCarthy’s lineup for the back-to-back games in Turkey against Madagascar and Comoros.

Head coach Benni McCarthy opted for a younger and more experimental squad, including promising talent Aldrine Kibet, who is set for his first senior call-up. The South African tactician also retained experienced names like Duke Abuya, but many fans were left surprised to see Olunga missing from the list, especially with his impressive club form in Qatar, where he has scored in consecutive matches for Al-Arabi.

Why Did Benni McCarthy Drop Michael Olunga?

Speaking to Flashscore, Olunga addressed his omission with characteristic humility and professionalism. He emphasized that he respected McCarthy’s decision, recognizing that squad selections are part of a broader vision for the team’s growth.

“That’s the coach’s decision. I believe every player was selected out of merit and give their best,” Olunga said.

The 31-year-old striker also acknowledged that Kenya’s football is currently in a transition phase. With the nation preparing to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania, McCarthy appears to be using the upcoming friendlies to test younger players and build depth in the squad.

“Now we’re entering a new transition phase when we bring young players into the squad, so the senior players have been dropped for the friendlies and the coach will have the chance to integrate the new boys and test them out,” Olunga added.

Olunga’s response reflected a captain’s maturity, placing the team’s long-term development above his personal disappointment. His remarks show a strong sense of leadership, a quality that has defined his tenure as Harambee Stars captain for nearly a decade.

What’s Next for Olunga and the Harambee Stars?

While Olunga sits out the November friendlies, he remains active and in form at club level. His team, Al-Arabi SC, will face Al Ahli Doha next weekend in the Qatari Stars League. The club currently sits eighth on the table with 10 points, trailing league leaders Al Gharafa by nine.

For the Harambee Stars, the focus now shifts toward testing new combinations and building momentum ahead of competitive fixtures in 2025. The decision to rest senior players like Olunga may be part of a bigger plan to create a balanced squad capable of competing on home soil when the Africa Cup of Nations returns to East Africa.

Despite being left out, Olunga remains optimistic about his future with the national team. He reaffirmed his commitment to Kenya and his determination to return stronger when called upon.

“I know I still have a lot more to give to Kenya. I want to keep working hard for the national team. Whenever the country needs me, I’ll always be there. It’s always an honour to represent Kenya,” he stated.

Olunga is currently one goal away from becoming Kenya’s all-time top scorer, a milestone that reflects his consistency and contribution to the national side over the years. His absence from the upcoming games may delay that record, but his focus remains firm on staying fit and ready for the next call-up.

As Kenya ushers in a new era under Benni McCarthy, Olunga’s attitude sets a tone of professionalism and mentorship. While new talents step up to prove themselves, the captain’s words serve as a reminder that leadership is not just about playing on the pitch but also about guiding the next generation from wherever you stand.
