Hellen Obiri’s Parents Celebrate Her Historic New York Marathon Win with Heartfelt Embrace

Hellen Obiri’s triumph at the 2025 New York Marathon turned emotional as her parents and daughter joined her at the finish line, showering her with love after she set a new course record to claim her second title. The victory cemented Obiri’s dominance in marathon running, following her first New York win in 2023.

Fellow Kenyans Sharon Lokedi and Sheila Chepkirui completed an all-Kenyan podium, while Olympic champion Sifan Hassan finished sixth. The race, held on Sunday, November 2, was the final marathon major of the year and one of the most competitive yet, showcasing the strength and unity of Kenya’s elite women runners.

How did Hellen Obiri take control of the race?

Obiri displayed remarkable patience and strategy, holding back for much of the race before unleashing her trademark finishing kick with less than 800 meters to go. She surged ahead of her close friend Sharon Lokedi, who tried to keep pace, as both runners had earlier teamed up with Sheila Chepkirui to fend off a persistent Sifan Hassan.

Hassan, who had competed in Sydney just months earlier, eventually fell behind, leaving the three Kenyans to battle it out. Chepkirui dropped off first, setting the stage for a thrilling showdown between Obiri and Lokedi, a rematch of the Boston Marathon earlier this year, where Lokedi had emerged victorious. This time, Obiri powered through, determined to reclaim her crown and deliver a flawless finish.

How did Obiri’s family celebrate her victory?

The finish line turned into a scene of pure joy as Obiri’s parents, proudly waving bananas, a symbol of her rural roots, jumped and cheered as their daughter crossed the line. Her young daughter, Tania “Blessing” Macheche, ran to embrace her mother, followed by her parents, who held her tightly in celebration. Her father tenderly wiped sweat from her face, capturing a moment that reflected years of sacrifice, love, and shared triumph.

Obiri has often credited her parents for inspiring her athletic journey. “When I know that my parents are watching, something comes into my mind, that I don’t want to let my parents down. Let me work extra hard to make them happy,” she once said in an interview with Essentially Sports.
