Maresca Blasts Liam Delap for ‘Stupid’ Red Card in Chelsea’s League Cup Win over Wolves

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca didn’t hold back after striker Liam Delap received what he called a “stupid” and “embarrassing” red card during Chelsea’s 4-3 League Cup victory over Wolves on Wednesday night. The incident overshadowed an otherwise thrilling performance that sent Chelsea into the quarter-finals.

Delap, making his first appearance since August after recovering from a hamstring injury, was sent off just minutes after coming off the bench. He earned two yellow cards within seven minutes, the first for wrestling Yerson Mosquera to the ground and the second for a reckless aerial challenge on Emmanuel Agbadou. The dismissal marked Chelsea’s sixth red card in nine games, adding to the club’s growing disciplinary problems.

“For today we have a foolish red card, that was completely unnecessary, absolutely it was a stupid foul, we can avoid that,” Maresca said after the match. “It’s embarrassing when it is a red card like today. It isn’t very comfortable, two yellow cards in seven minutes. Both I think we can avoid.”

Why Was Maresca So Frustrated With Delap’s Red Card?

Maresca explained that Delap’s lack of composure was the main issue, especially after he had already warned him to stay calm. “After the first yellow card I told him four or five times ‘keep calm’, but he’s a player when he is inside the pitch, probably he is playing the game for himself and he struggled to realise and to listen around him,” he said.

The red card not only reduced Chelsea to ten men but also means Delap will miss Saturday’s crucial London derby against Tottenham, a major setback just as he was regaining fitness. Maresca emphasized that while some red cards this season were unavoidable, this one was entirely preventable. “I completely support and understand the red card against Brighton and Manchester United, that is difficult, but the red card against Nottingham and a red card today, we can avoid that, and we have to avoid that,” he said.

How Did Chelsea Manage to Hold On for the Win?

Before Delap’s dismissal, Chelsea appeared in control. Goals from Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, and Estevão gave them a 3-0 lead at halftime. Wolves, however, fought back through Tolu Arokodare and David Wolfe, setting up a tense finish. After Jamie Gittens struck in the 90th minute to make it 4-2, Wolfe scored again moments later to bring the score to 4-3.

Despite the late pressure and the red card drama, Chelsea held on to secure a narrow win and a spot in the quarter-finals, where they will face third-tier Cardiff City. For Maresca, the victory was overshadowed by a lesson in discipline that he insists his squad must learn quickly if they are to maintain their momentum this season.
