As preparations for the burial of Gengetone artist Shalkido ga Cucu continue, his family has publicly addressed the rumors connecting comedians Oga Obinna and Eric Omondi to his tragic death. The family’s statement comes after days of intense online speculation following the young musician’s passing.
How Did Shalkido Die?
Shalkido, best known as a member of the popular group Sailors Gang, died a day after a hit-and-run accident along Thika Road on Sunday, October 5. He sustained severe head injuries that caused internal swelling and bleeding in the brain. Doctors later pronounced him brain-dead.
The accident occurred shortly after he left a club where he had met Oga Obinna. At the time, Shalkido was riding the motorbike gifted to him by Eric Omondi as part of an effort to help him rebuild his life after financial struggles. Both Eric and Obinna had supported him during a difficult period following the decline of the Gengetone wave, which had once made Sailors Gang a household name.
Soon after news of his death broke, online users began spreading rumors that the two celebrities were somehow linked to the tragedy. Some even criticized Eric for gifting Shalkido the motorbike, while others made bizarre claims about his vehicle’s number plate.
What Has Shalkido’s Family Said about the Rumors?
In a statement, the family strongly dismissed the speculation and expressed appreciation to both Eric and Obinna for their genuine support. “As a family, we wish to clarify sincerely and respectfully that we do not hold Obinna or even Eric accountable for Shalkido’s passing. We have accepted that his death was a tragic accident. We urge the public to avoid speculation or blame,” the statement read.
They also encouraged anyone with credible information to help police with investigations. “If anyone has credible information about what transpired that night, please record a statement at Kasarani Police Station, where the case is under investigation,” they added.
The family’s calm and firm response has been widely praised by fans who called for respect and compassion during this period of mourning.
Meanwhile, fellow artist Kevin Bahati joined others in mourning Shalkido. His condolence post, however, drew mixed reactions after he shared screenshots of private messages showing Shalkido had reached out to him weeks earlier asking for a collaboration. Critics questioned the gesture, but Bahati later defended himself, saying he only meant to honor Shalkido’s memory.
