Okwemba Backs Fearless Harambee Stars to Stun Ivory Coast in WCQ

Former AFC Leopards midfielder Charles Okwemba believes Harambee Stars have what it takes to stand up to Group F leaders Ivory Coast in Tuesday’s crucial World Cup qualifier. His confidence echoes the fearless approach of head coach Benni McCarthy, who earlier stated that Kenya will not fear any opponent, regardless of reputation or record.

Ivory Coast currently sit on 23 points, just one ahead of second-placed Gabon, and are well aware that a slip against Kenya could jeopardize their qualification hopes. For Okwemba, McCarthy’s bold mentality is exactly what the team needs heading into this high-pressure fixture.

“It’s very much for McCarthy (Benni) to say we don’t fear any team. The moment we step on that pitch I can assure you that any team can produce results against any opponent in this present world of football,” Okwemba said. “The team will always want to ride on the strongest belief of their head coach and so when you see McCarthy saying so it is for the benefit of our boys to go out there with no doubt that they can produce a win against the African champions.”

Can Kenya Withstand Ivory Coast’s Pressure?

Despite his optimism, Okwemba acknowledged that the encounter will not be easy. Harambee Stars have won two consecutive matches for the first time in the current World Cup qualifiers, including a 1–0 victory over Burundi that lifted them to third in the group. However, Ivory Coast will be pushing for nothing less than a win to secure their ticket to the 2026 World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

The last time Kenya faced Ivory Coast, on June 11, 2025, the match ended in a goalless draw at the Bingu National Stadium in Malawi. Kenya hosted that fixture away from home due to the lack of a CAF-approved stadium.

What’s at Stake for Harambee Stars?

With heavyweights like Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria already securing their World Cup spots, only four slots remain for African teams. A win against Ivory Coast would mark a historic statement for Harambee Stars and potentially shake up Group F standings.

As Kenya prepares for its toughest test yet, the players carry not only McCarthy’s fearless message but also the belief of millions of fans hoping for an upset against the reigning African champions.
