Kenyatta University Tops University of Nairobi in Global Rankings

Kenyatta University (KU) has once again outperformed the University of Nairobi (UoN) in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, solidifying its growing global reputation. The report highlights KU’s impressive strides in international engagement, teaching quality, and social impact, reaffirming its position as one of Kenya’s most progressive institutions.

How Did KU Surpass UoN in Global Rankings?

According to the 2025 Impact Rankings, KU ranked between 1001–1500 overall, excelling in critical Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as Good Health and Wellbeing (201–300), Zero Hunger (201–300), and Reduced Inequalities (201–300). These rankings underscore KU’s commitment to addressing real-world challenges and building global academic partnerships.

UoN, Kenya’s oldest and largest university, still leads in traditional academic measures like Teaching (15.9) and Research Quality (39.7), and continues to excel in specialized disciplines such as Medical and Health Sciences (601–800). However, the latest data reveals KU’s dominance in overall impact and international outlook, giving it an edge in shaping Kenya’s higher education narrative.

With over 70,000 students across 13 campuses, KU’s continuous investment in digital learning and innovation has strengthened its global visibility. Meanwhile, UoN remains a powerhouse with over 80,000 students and a vast alumni network spanning industries and countries.
