Kenya’s Harambee Starlets are gearing up for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifiers, and all eyes are on the newest faces in the squad. Goalkeeper Mercy Adhiambo, defender Lorine Ilavonga, and midfielder Elizabeth Muteshi are among the U20 graduates stepping into the senior team for the first time, hungry to prove they belong at the highest level.
Following a tough training camp, the technical bench trimmed the provisional squad from 38 to 23 players. Despite the cuts, the young trio is brimming with confidence, ready to make an impression rather than just fill up the bench.
Lorine Ilavonga, who rises through the ranks from Kenya’s U20 women’s national team, hopes to secure a spot in defense alongside experienced names such as Dorcas Neema (Kibera Soccer Women), Lavyne Ochola (Kayole Starlet), and Kikky Masika (Zetech Sparks). She shared what keeps her focused on her goal:
“You need to work hard, believe in yourself, and have the confidence to earn your place in the national team,” Ilavonga said. “I’m here to give my best, learn quickly from the coaches, and trust that the rest will fall into place.”
In midfield, Elizabeth Muteshi is also eager to make her mark after being promoted by head coach Beldine Odemba. Reflecting on her journey, she recalled how her determination earned her this opportunity.
“After our match against Cameroon, the coach advised us to focus on our clubs and work hard for a chance with the senior team,” she said. “Now that I’m here, I’m grateful for how far I’ve come, and I’m ready to prove myself.”
The Harambee Starlets will open their WAFCON qualifying campaign at home against Gambia on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi. The return leg will follow on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Stade Lat Dior in Thiès, Senegal.
