Nigeria to Kenya: Why Do Celebrities Only Notice the Dead?

There was a time back in Nigeria, around 2023, when the country was mourning the untimely death of Mohbad. In the midst of the grief, Rema shared a screenshot revealing that Mohbad had once reached out to him in a DM, a message he, sadly, never replied to. That single post sent fans into a frenzy, accusing Rema of being insensitive and sparking heated debates online. For days, his name dominated the trends.

Not long after, another artist, Oxlade, the voice behind the hit “Kulosa”, was also called out. Screenshots surfaced showing that he had restricted Mohbad’s messages on Instagram. The late singer had sent him a heartfelt note, complimenting his talent and sending him love, yet it appeared to go unnoticed.

Fast forward to today, and a similar story is unfolding right here in Kenya. Musician Bahati has found himself in the spotlight after screenshots emerged showing that the late Shalkido had once reached out asking for a collaboration, a message that, again, seems to have gone unanswered.

It’s a sad pattern we keep seeing in the industry. When the messages finally resurface, it’s often too late. You can’t help but wonder, why do so many celebrities wait until someone is gone to show love they could have given when it truly mattered?
