Kenyan singer Willis Chimano lit up the stage at the September 2025 Blankets and Wine festival with a performance that has since gone viral for its mix of glamour, artistry, and controversy. The event took place at Laureate Gardens, Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and quickly became the talk of social media.
Dressed first in a lilac-striped suit with exaggerated shoulder pads, Chimano later transitioned into a purple chiffon top, flowy pants, and a corset detailed with embellishments. Oversized sunglasses, sparkling jewelry, a brown tie, and bold makeup completed the standout look. The performance featured dramatic lighting and backup dancers, all reinforcing his signature flair.
Why Did Chimano’s Twerk Performance Divide Fans?
Among the standout moments was Chimano’s unexpected twerk, which instantly sparked debate online. Admirers praised his courage, creativity, and stage presence, while critics dismissed it as excessive. Despite the backlash, his boldness positioned him at the center of Kenya’s evolving music culture.
Even fellow artists weighed in with support. Bien-Aimé Baraza commented on Instagram, “You killed it,” after making a surprise appearance during Ugandan artist Joshua Baraka’s set. Polycarp “Fancy Fingers” Otieno added, “Beautiful.” Festival founder Muthoni the Drummer Queen and influencer Just Ivy echoed the admiration, with Ivy calling him “THE MOMENT.”
Chimano’s set was just one part of a packed lineup. Fans also enjoyed performances from We Are Nubia, Zaituni, Flier, Billy Black, and Toxic Lyrikali, alongside Baraka. The OnjaOnja stage showcased talents like Akoth Jumadi, Mr Lu, Ite, Ghedi, Santa, Hiribae, Bune, Coco Khai, and DJ Paps.
However, not everything went smoothly. Some attendees voiced frustrations over technical glitches, sound problems, and long delays. Still, Nigerian Grammy winner Tems, the festival’s headliner, closed the night with an electrifying set that sealed the event’s place as one of the most talked-about shows of the year.
Chimano’s performance, though polarizing, reaffirmed his role as an artist unafraid to challenge convention and push boundaries within Kenya’s music scene.
