Trans Nzoia County is set to increase its investment in sports as a tribute to Emmanuel Wanyonyi, the 800m sensation who recently clinched gold at the World Athletics Championships. The decision aims to inspire the next generation of athletes by building on the momentum created by Wanyonyi’s international success.

Hailing from Kapretwa village in Saboti Ward, Wanyonyi has become a source of pride not just for Kenya but also for his local community. His performances this season have shown young athletes that global success is within reach.

Governor George Natembeya praised the champion for his impact on both the country and the county. “Wanyonyi has not only made Kenya proud but has also shown the youth of Trans Nzoia what determination, discipline, and talent can achieve. He is a true role model,” Natembeya said.

How Will Trans Nzoia Support Upcoming Athletes?

Governor Natembeya revealed that his administration plans to channel more resources into sports infrastructure and talent development programs. He stressed that sports can offer more than recognition, pointing to its economic potential in addressing youth unemployment.

“There are no jobs out here. Sports can feed you, lift your family, and open international doors. Let’s nurture and use our talents,” he added.

Wanyonyi’s gold medal was part of a wider wave of Kenyan success in Tokyo, where a new generation of champions cemented the country’s global dominance in middle-distance running. His victory also contributed to Kenya securing second place overall at the championships, reinforcing the nation’s reputation as an athletics powerhouse.

By honoring Wanyonyi’s achievements with concrete investments, Trans Nzoia is positioning itself as a breeding ground for future champions while ensuring that sports remain a pathway to opportunity for young people.
