NEMA Flags 107 Bars and Clubs, Including Quiver and Bar Next Door, Over Noise Pollution

Why Has NEMA Targeted Entertainment Joints?
The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has flagged 107 entertainment joints across Kenya for possible closure due to noise pollution. In a public notice, the regulator explained that it has been receiving a growing number of complaints about loud music from bars, lounges, clubs, and restaurants, especially in major cities like Nairobi and Mombasa.

According to NEMA, most of the listed establishments had previously been served with Environmental Restoration Orders requiring them to submit compliance documents. These included noise control measures, environmental audits, and operating licenses. However, the majority failed to comply.

“NEMA has been receiving noise pollution complaints regarding clubs, lounges, bars, and restaurants across the country. Several facilities have been issued Environmental Restoration Orders requiring them to provide environmental compliance documents, but the majority have failed to comply,” the notice read.

The authority added that noise-related complaints have risen by 15% in the past year, disrupting the peace of many communities, particularly in densely populated urban areas.

Which Popular Spots Have Been Listed?
Some of Nairobi’s most well-known entertainment joints feature on the list. These include Quiver Lounge (Eastlands and Kilimani), Bar Next Door, 1824, Paris Lounge, Havana Lounge, and Cool Breeze Bar in Ruiru. Al Fakher, Kettle House, Airport Club, O.J. Club Ruiru, Ibury Lounge, and Club Ibiza are also among those affected.

Restaurants and eateries are not exempt. Alaska Lounge and Grill, Funcity Hotel, Mchana Restaurant, Kijito Gardens, and Mamba Village have also been warned to comply or risk closure.

NEMA has directed all flagged operators to submit the required documents within seven days. These include proof of noise control, incorporation certificates, environmental impact assessments, and written explanations defending their operations.

Failure to meet the deadline could lead to prosecution, closure, or further legal action. The crackdown aligns with preparations for World Cleanup Day 2025, with NEMA extending its efforts beyond noise pollution to tackle textile waste and other environmental hazards.
