Kenya’s Tourism Breaks Record with Ksh.452 Billion in Earnings in 2024

Kenyan Tourism CS Rebecca Miano during a recent event

Kenya’s tourism industry recorded its best year yet in 2024, earning Ksh.452 billion in revenue and welcoming more than 2.4 million international visitors. According to Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano, these numbers represent the highest in the country’s history and confirm the sector’s strong post-COVID recovery.

“The state of tourism in Kenya is a story of progress and good news. We are on an upward trajectory. At the close of 2024, we did welcome 2.4 million international visitors into the country and that was the highest ever,” said CS Miano during an interview on Citizen TV.

In addition to revenue, the industry remains a vital source of livelihoods, providing over 1.1 million direct jobs and more than 3 million indirect jobs across the country.

What is Driving Growth in Kenya’s Tourism Sector?

Miano highlighted that Kenya is working to diversify its offerings beyond the traditional wildlife safaris and coastal attractions. She explained that cultural tourism is gaining traction while adventure tourism, wellness travel, and local cuisine are being promoted as fresh experiences for visitors. “Kenya has a lot of tourism products. For a long time, Kenya has been seen as just the beach and the bush because of the wildlife and our coast. We are diversifying our tourism products to include cultural tourism…adventure tourism, wellness, and cuisine,” she said.

She also noted the rise of astro-tourism and highlighted the popularity of nyama choma as part of Kenya’s unique food culture.

How is Kenya Improving Visitor Experience?

To remain globally competitive, the ministry has streamlined processes for international travelers. Efforts include reforms in visa openness, upgrades to the electronic travel authorization system, and improvements in immigration services.

Miano also emphasized the importance of business and conference tourism, pointing out that a conference tourist spends two to three times more than a leisure visitor. Plans are underway to develop a state-of-the-art conference facility to strengthen Kenya’s appeal as a hub for international events.

The growth of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo further underlines the sector’s momentum. This year’s edition, running from October 1 to 3, will bring together more than 400 exhibitors and 5,000 delegates from around the world.

With record earnings and an expanding range of tourism products, Kenya’s tourism sector continues to shine as one of the country’s strongest economic pillars.
