UK Issues Kenya Travel Alert, Lists High-Risk Counties to Avoid

The United Kingdom has issued a new travel advisory cautioning its citizens against visiting certain parts of Kenya, citing security threats from terrorist groups, banditry, and kidnappings. The advisory urges British nationals to only travel when necessary and to ensure they have adequate travel insurance that covers activities, itineraries, and emergency expenses.

Which Kenyan Counties Are Listed in the UK Travel Advisory?

According to the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), citizens are advised against all travel to areas in the east of Kenya, particularly those bordering Somalia. The counties highlighted include Mandera, Tarbaj and Wajir East constituencies in Wajir County, except Wajir Town, as well as all areas within 60km of the Kenya-Somalia border.

In Garissa County, the restriction excludes Garissa Town but covers Lagdera constituency and parts of Balambala constituency north and west of the main road from Saka on the Tana River to the intersection with the C81 Road. Lamu County is also flagged, except for Lamu and Manda Island. In Tana River County, the advisory applies to areas north of the Tana River up to Saka and within 15km of the east coast between the Tana River and the Galana (Athi-Galana-Sabaki) River.

The FCDO explained that the listed counties face risks from terrorist groups such as Al Shabaab, alongside other militias. British nationals and other Westerners have previously been targeted in these areas, and the possibility of further kidnappings remains high.

What Precautions Should Travellers Take?

The advisory strongly recommends that those who still choose to travel to the affected areas take extra precautions. Travellers are urged to research their destinations thoroughly and secure travel insurance that covers both planned activities and emergency situations.

“Insurance should cover your itinerary, planned activities, and expenses in an emergency,” the FCDO statement emphasized.
