Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) surgery has become one of the most sought-after cosmetic procedures, especially with celebrities and influencers flaunting curvier figures and smaller waists. But behind the glamour lies a less talked-about reality: recovery challenges and the trending phenomenon known as the “BBL smell.”
What causes the BBL smell?
The term describes an unpleasant, musty or sour odour that some patients notice during recovery. It can be caused by fluid drainage, sweat trapped under compression garments, bacterial growth, or the natural tissue healing process. Post-surgical odours are not unusual, especially after liposuction, but they can be distressing for patients.
Dr. Kennedy Omondi, a Nairobi-based wound science and tissue viability specialist, explains that several factors can contribute to the smell. “The liposuction site, in particular, can be more vulnerable to infection, especially if not properly cleaned or if moisture is trapped under compression garments,” he says. According to him, poor hygiene, surgical malpractice, poor fat assimilation, and not following post-operation instructions all increase risks.
When should patients worry?
Dr. Omondi emphasizes that while two in every ten patients may notice changes in body odour, it should not be dismissed as normal. “In human anatomy, fat tissues don’t have a strong blood network, and if they fail to attach properly, they can die, leading to fat necrosis (dead fat) which can cause an odour,” he explains. He adds that a clean surgical wound should never produce an odour. Temporary smells often resolve within two weeks, but persistent foul odour, especially with redness, pus, vomiting, or skin darkening, signals infection and requires urgent medical care.
How can patients prevent it?
The golden rule, according to Dr. Omondi, is to “keep it clean, dry and simple.” Patients should change clothes often, shower with care, and avoid oily or perfumed products that can trap bacteria. Taking prescribed antibiotics, staying hydrated, eating a balanced diet, and limiting alcohol and nicotine also speed up healing.
The BBL smell is more than just a social media trend. It is a reminder that cosmetic surgery comes with risks and recovery demands careful hygiene, medical attention, and lifestyle discipline.
