Wanyonyi, widely seen as a gold medal contender, showed his trademark composure with a confident and controlled run to take his heat. Loti maintained an aggressive pace from start to finish, holding his position throughout to punch his ticket to the semis. Kebenei had to fight harder for his place but managed to qualify with a time of 1:44.91, sliding in as one of the fastest outside the automatic spots.
