University Student Killed and Buried in Shallow Grave in Nyamira

Police in Nyamira have launched a manhunt for 22-year-old Gideon Makori, who allegedly confessed to killing his girlfriend and burying her in a shallow grave. The victim, 20-year-old Faith Kemunto, had been missing since July. Her remains were discovered in Maosi village after homicide detectives cordoned off part of a road where her body was concealed.

How was Faith Kemunto’s body discovered?

Kemunto reportedly left home in June carrying her phone and a mango. After weeks of unsuccessful searches, a breakthrough came when her sister-in-law received a disturbing message allegedly sent by Makori. The message pointed to a specific location in Maosi where the body was later found.
“Ilikuwa imendikwa ati huyu Fay tulimzika huko juu Maosi mahali wanatoa mchanga karibu na tangi. Sasa nikawacha tu wakaenda,” said Grace Nyaitondi, the mother of the deceased.

Both Kemunto and Makori were set to join the university this week, adding to the shock and grief surrounding the case.

What are the family and community saying?

Kemunto’s father, Charles Obino, expressed his heartbreak while calling on authorities to deliver justice. “Hatujakuwa na matatizo vile alikuwa anatoka shule anakaa nyumbani. Sasa kile tu naomba kwa serikali, inisaidie ama itusaidie kutatua hiyo matatizo yote,” he said.

Residents voiced concern over rising cases of violence among youth in the area. “Vijana wa shule wengi wamekufa kwa hii mwezi tu wa university… Mwingine wa Form 2 alichomwa hapa chini Gakii. Jameni vijana wetu wameisha, tunaelekea wapi?” said resident Edna Kemunto.

What steps are police taking now?

Police are seeking court orders to exhume the body for further investigations. At the same time, officers are pursuing the prime suspect, Gideon Makori, who remains at large. Authorities are urging the public to remain calm as the search continues.
