Kenya’s national women’s volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, received a much-needed boost on Friday after the Ministry of Sports settled their pending allowances. The confirmation came just hours before the ten-time African champions face Germany in their opening match at the FIVB World Championships in Phuket, Thailand.
The relief followed a viral video earlier in the day in which players appealed directly to President William Ruto over unpaid dues since entering the residential camp at Nyayo Stadium. The outcry sparked intense debate online, with many comparing their treatment to Harambee Stars, who recently received substantial incentives during the CHAN campaign.
What Did KVF Say About the Payments?
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Kenya Volleyball Federation Deputy President Paul Bitok reassured fans that the matter had been addressed. “I am pleased to inform you that we received sponsorship from the Ministry yesterday afternoon. All pending payments accrued during training, as well as for the international friendlies in Vietnam and Thailand, will be fully settled,” he said.
Bitok explained that the Ministry was finalizing disbursements to players’ accounts. “This morning, I was at the Ministry to follow up on players’ allowances. The process is at its final stage, and the allowances will be deposited into each player’s account soon. There is no cause for concern. We are sorry for the delay, but all will be sorted,” he added.
How Are the Players Preparing for Germany?
The former Malkia Strikers coach also revealed that the Sports Fund had already credited allowances and additional funds to KVF accounts to cover logistics. He confirmed he would remain behind briefly to finalize arrangements before flying out to join the squad. “I kindly request all players and technical staff to stay focused on tomorrow’s match, as all financial matters will be resolved. I will travel tonight after ensuring everything is in order,” he emphasized.
Malkia Strikers are in Group G alongside Poland, Germany, and Vietnam. Their campaign begins against Germany, with hopes of a strong start now that financial distractions have been resolved. The tournament will be staged across Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phuket, and Chiang Mai, with the top two teams from each pool advancing to the round of 16.
