The Ministry of Education has released Ksh.9.46 billion through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) to support 309,178 university students across the country. Education Cabinet Secretary Migos Ogamba confirmed the allocation, highlighting that Ksh.5.76 billion will cater for tuition fees while Ksh.3.7 billion will be directed to student upkeep.

“We are pleased to notify parents, guardians and university students that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has, as of today, disbursed a total of Ksh.9.46 billion in financial support to 309,178 university students,” stated Ogamba.

How Can Students Access the Funds?

The CS encouraged learners to log into their HELB portals to confirm whether the money has been credited to their accounts. He emphasized that the platform also provides detailed information regarding each student’s loan status and transactions. Ogamba reassured students that the government remains committed to ensuring higher education remains both accessible and affordable.

What Broader Funding Plans Has the Government Announced?

The disbursement comes shortly after the government raised HELB’s budget by Ksh.5 billion, increasing the allocation from Ksh.36 billion to Ksh.41 billion. Deputy President Kithure Kindiki noted that the additional funding would expand access to loans and bursaries, easing the financial burden for many learners.

How Is the Government Supporting Other Institutions?

Beyond university financing, the Ministry of Education has also reduced university fees and extended greater support to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. The broader initiative seeks to equip students with industry-relevant skills and strengthen Kenya’s workforce for future economic demands.

This latest disbursement offers much-needed relief to thousands of students and their families, underscoring the government’s continued efforts to prioritize education funding.
