Star forward Ryan Wesley Ogam delivered once again, scoring the decisive goal that powered Harambee Stars to a 1-0 win over Zambia at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. The victory secured Kenya’s top spot in Group A with 10 points and a place in the quarterfinals, where they will face Madagascar at the same venue on Friday.
How Did the Match Unfold?
Coach Benni McCarthy made several tactical changes heading into the clash. Goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo got his first minutes of the tournament, with Byrne Omondi rested after playing every game so far. Marvin Omondi Nabwire returned from suspension, while Austin Odhiambo earned a starting role after coming off the bench in the famous 1-0 win over Morocco.
The first half was tight, with chances hard to come by. Zambia’s best opportunity fell to captain Kelvin Kampamba, whose curling free-kick drifted wide of the post. For Kenya, Ogam combined well with Stanley Omondi in a clever move, though it didn’t yield a breakthrough.

What Changed in the Second Half?
McCarthy introduced Masud Juma and Boniface Muchiri to inject more energy. Juma’s header nearly broke the deadlock, forcing Zambia goalkeeper Charles Kaluma into action. Muchiri also tested Kaluma with a thunderous free-kick, as the crowd, which included President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, roared in support despite heavy rain at Kasarani.
Ogam finally made the difference with a clinical left-foot finish inside the box, securing three points and sending the Stars through as group leaders.
Kenya will now host Madagascar in the quarterfinals at Kasarani on Friday. Meanwhile, Morocco defeated DR Congo 3-1 at Nyayo Stadium to finish second in Group A and set up a clash with Tanzania in Dar es Salaam.
The victory also came with big rewards: each Harambee Stars player and technical bench member pocketed Ksh 2.5 million in bonuses from the government, pushing their total tournament earnings to Ksh 5 million.
