Kenya’s Harambee Stars pulled off a massive statement at CHAN 2024 after topping Group A with an unbeaten run, capped by a gritty win against Zambia at Kasarani Stadium. Against the odds, Kenya went through a tough pool that featured continental giants Morocco, DR Congo, and Angola, yet emerged without a single loss. The quarter-final now sets them up for a home clash against Madagascar on August 22 in Nairobi.
Why Did Benni McCarthy Aim a Dig at Tanzania?
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy couldn’t resist throwing a cheeky swipe at East African rivals Tanzania after the fixtures were confirmed. Many Tanzanian fans had doubted Kenya’s ability to progress, but the tables quickly turned when Tanzania finished top of Group B and were handed Morocco in the quarters.
“Tanzania will get its wish, and they will experience what we experienced. The group of death, now Morocco is going to Tanzania, so I want feedback after the Morocco game, so that they know what we went through in this tournament. So yeah, good luck to Tanzania in the next round,” McCarthy said.
Kenya had already proved their mettle by beating Morocco earlier in the group stage, even after playing an entire half with 10 men following Crispine Erambo’s red card. A goal from Ryan Ogam gave the Harambee Stars a crucial lead, and disciplined defending secured a memorable victory.

Can Tanzania Stop Morocco?
Tanzania now faces a brutal test in Dar es Salaam. Their record against Morocco has been dismal, losing recent World Cup qualifiers home and away, both by 2-0. They also suffered a 3-0 defeat to Morocco at AFCON 2023. Despite home support, they head into the tie as underdogs.
Still, Taifa Stars coach Hemed “Morocco” Suleiman insists his side is ready. “To win the title, you need to win tough matches, too. Our target is not just to reach the knockout stage, but to go all the way. We have been preparing for every possible scenario,” he said.
While Tanzania lock horns with Morocco, Harambee Stars will welcome Madagascar at Kasarani. The island nation finished second in Group B after edging Burkina Faso on the final day. With Kenya carrying the momentum of a tough group-stage campaign and home support, McCarthy’s side will be aiming to extend their fairytale run.
