Barcelona have removed Marc-André ter Stegen from his role as captain following an escalating dispute over the German goalkeeper’s fitness status. In an official statement, the club confirmed: “As a consequence of the disciplinary proceedings initiated against player Marc-Andre ter Stegen, and until such proceedings are definitively resolved, the club… has decided to remove him as captain of the first football team temporarily.” Vice-captain Ronald Araujo will now take over leadership duties on the pitch.

What Sparked the Barcelona–Ter Stegen Rift?

Local reports indicate the fallout is linked to Ter Stegen’s refusal to cooperate with Barcelona’s attempt to have him classified by La Liga as a long-term injury case. Such a classification would allow the club to reduce his salary from their official wage bill, a critical move as they continue to face pressure from Spanish financial fair play rules ahead of the new season. The 33-year-old recently underwent back surgery in late July after two injury-hit seasons but has declined to release his medical data to La Liga, blocking the club’s plan.

Barcelona’s financial struggles remain a pressing issue, with player registration for new signings at risk if they fail to meet regulations. The club also intends to partially reopen the newly renovated Camp Nou this month, adding to the urgency to resolve internal disputes.

What Does This Mean for Ter Stegen’s Future?

With the arrival of 24-year-old Joan Garcia and the extension of veteran Wojciech Szczesny’s contract after a title-winning campaign, Ter Stegen’s starting position is now under serious threat. As the last remaining member of Luis Enrique’s 2015 Champions League-winning side, he faces potential heavy penalties under La Liga rules, including the termination of his contract.

This marks a dramatic turn for a player once considered an untouchable figure at Barcelona, casting doubt over whether his long-term future lies at the club.
