Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy is full of praise for Kenya’s fans and a bold tactical adjustment that helped the team secure a crucial 1-0 victory over DR Congo in their CHAN 2024 opener at Kasarani Stadium.
How Did Fans Impact the Harambee Stars’ Performance?
McCarthy lauded the home support for their unwavering energy and belief in the team, describing them as a key factor in the win.
“The fans have shown us love, and they stood by the team based on how the players played. I am just slightly disappointed we didn’t give them a second or third goal,” he said after the match. The full stadium atmosphere lifted the team throughout the 90 minutes, helping maintain composure even as DR Congo pressed for an equalizer.
What Tactical Change Made the Difference?
A standout move by McCarthy was the surprise use of Manzur Suleiman in a defensive midfield role. Originally considered for left back, Suleiman was repositioned after training sessions revealed his potential to control tempo and disrupt the opposition’s rhythm.
“I initially thought of playing him at left back, but the more I watched him, the more I knew he belonged in midfield. He was young, energetic, and brave, just what we needed to disrupt DR Congo’s game plan,” McCarthy noted. He went on to call the tactical switch a “gamble that worked to perfection,” praising Suleiman’s display as one of the strongest performances on the pitch.
While the first win brings relief, McCarthy emphasized that the challenge is far from over.
“Angola isn’t going to get any easier. The hardest hurdle for us is over, which is getting our first win in the first game of the tournament, and now the boys can relax a bit and prepare for Angola,” he said, referring to their upcoming clash on Thursday, August 7.
Morale in the Harambee Stars camp remains high, bolstered by ongoing support from President William Ruto, who continues to back the squad with both visible encouragement and promised reward packages. McCarthy believes this backing fuels the team’s hunger to go further.
With belief, unity, and a smart tactical foundation, McCarthy is confident Kenya has what it takes to make an even deeper run in CHAN 2024.
