How Did Kenya Secure a Winning Start in CHAN 2024?
Harambee Stars kicked off their CHAN 2024 campaign with a solid 1-0 victory over DR Congo on Sunday at the newly refurbished Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Austin Odhiambo was the difference-maker, scoring the match-winning goal that gave Kenya three crucial points in front of a home crowd and an impressed President William Ruto.
The win came with extra motivation. Just a day before the game, President Ruto had pledged a Ksh. 1 million reward for each player for every win in the tournament. The team delivered, though it remained unclear when the funds would be disbursed.
Coach Benni McCarthy, overseeing his first major tournament with the national side, placed his trust in Bryne Odhiambo as goalkeeper. The defensive lineup featured captain Aboud Omar at left back, Daniel Sakari on the right, with Alphonse Omija and Sylvestre Owino holding the centre.
Teenager Manzur Okwaro was handed the defensive midfield responsibilities, anchoring the middle behind Gor Mahia’s Alpha Onyango and the eventual goal scorer, Austin Odhiambo. Tusker’s Ryan Ogam operated on the right wing, while Bandari’s Wekesa took charge of the left flank. Leading the attack was Masoud Juma, the promising striker from Migori Youth.
Did VAR Play a Role in the Match Outcome?
DR Congo appeared to have gone ahead midway through the first half, but their goal was overruled after a VAR check confirmed an offside in the buildup. That moment proved pivotal, as Kenya maintained composure and struck when it mattered.
With a confidence-boosting win in the bag, Harambee Stars will now focus on their upcoming fixtures, knowing that every victory not only lifts their CHAN 2024 hopes but also secures financial rewards. Coach McCarthy’s mix of youth and experience seems to be clicking at the right time.
