Why Was Shadrack Chaula Arrested?

Tanzanian police have arrested 24-year-old artist Shadrack Chaula after he was filmed verbally insulting President Samia Suluhu Hassan and setting her portrait ablaze. The incident, which took place on June 30 in Ntokela Village, Rungwe District, quickly went viral and drew national outrage.

Following the public circulation of the video, Mbeya Regional Commissioner Juma Homera ordered Chaula’s arrest. “After identifying the video clip showing the suspect’s offensive statements and actions, we initiated an investigation and subsequently apprehended him,” said Mbeya Regional Police Commander Benjamin Kuzaga. Authorities are now preparing charges and said Chaula is under interrogation to determine the motive behind the act.

What Laws Did Chaula Allegedly Violate?

Though police have yet to name the specific laws broken, authorities say Chaula’s actions violate Tanzanian legal and cultural norms. “The suspect is an artist who committed the offence of burning a picture depicting President Samia Suluhu Hassan. Such actions are contrary to the laws and cultural norms of our country,” Kuzaga stated, according to The Citizen.

The case file is being finalized and will be submitted to the Prosecutor’s Office to ensure Chaula faces legal consequences.

Salma Ally, a resident, expressed deep concern and called for strict legal action. “The seriousness of this incident cannot be overstated. It is unacceptable for anyone to publicly insult our Head of State and commit such disrespectful acts,” she said.
