KPLC Explains Why Electricity Units Have Dropped Despite Paying the Same Amount

How Does KPLC Determine Your Electricity Rate?
The Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has clarified why many consumers are receiving fewer electricity units even when paying the same amount. The company says the changes are tied to how customers are grouped into tariff categories based on their average electricity consumption over three consecutive months.

“A tariff category is calculated based on your average consumption over three consecutive months, not just your current month’s usage,” KPLC stated.

Tariffs are pricing structures that include the cost of electricity per unit and other applicable charges. Depending on how much electricity you use monthly, you fall into one of three main categories: DCL-1, DC2-O, or DC3-O.

What Are the Different KPLC Tariff Categories?
Customers using 30 or fewer units per month fall under the DCL-1 category, also known as Lifeline consumers. These customers are charged Ksh 12.33 per unit and are typically low-usage households.

Those consuming between 31 and 100 units per month are placed in the DC2-O category. These customers pay Ksh 16.45 per unit, a higher rate than the Lifeline group due to their moderate usage.

Consumers who use between 101 and 15,000 units monthly fall into the DC3-O category. They pay the highest rate of Ksh 19.08 per unit.

All these charges apply to both prepaid and postpaid customers and do not include additional taxes and levies, which are billed separately.

Why Have Your Units Reduced Even If You Spend the Same?
If you notice a reduction in units despite paying the same amount, it’s likely that your average usage over the past three months has increased, pushing you into a higher tariff bracket. Even small, consistent changes in usage can shift your billing category, leading to higher rates per unit.

This means a household that previously paid Ksh 500 and received 40 units may now get fewer units if their average monthly use recently crossed a new threshold.
