A 4-year-old girl and her mother remain detained at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) due to an unpaid medical bill amounting to Ksh.124,000. The child, who was diagnosed with kidney failure, has been under treatment at the facility since March 8, 2025, and was recently discharged following recovery. However, her mother, Marren Anyago, says they have been unable to leave the hospital because of the outstanding charges.
Why Is the Family Still at the Hospital?
Despite her daughter being cleared to go home, Anyago says the hospital will not release them until the full amount is paid. “The bill has accumulated to Ksh.124,000 and it continues to increase while I am still in the hospital,” she said. The mother, who comes from Uriri sub-county in Migori County, explained that she has made several attempts to seek help from different sources but has not raised enough funds to settle the bill.
She is now appealing to leaders in Migori and kind-hearted well-wishers to step in and help them regain their freedom.
What Is the Situation Like Back Home?
The financial burden has extended beyond the hospital. Back in Uriri, Anyago’s six other children have been evicted from their rental house due to unpaid rent. She told Ramogi FM that the children are now living with a neighbor, who has also reached a breaking point trying to support them.
What Kind of Support Is Needed?
As the hospital stay continues to increase the bill, the family’s situation grows more desperate by the day. Marren Anyago is asking for urgent financial assistance to clear the bill and be reunited with her other children. Her plea highlights the broader challenges many low-income families face when dealing with serious health emergencies.
