Portugal has won the UEFA Nations League for the second time, defeating Spain in a dramatic final that ended in penalties. The match, held at the Allianz Arena, ended 2-2 after extra time, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring during regulation play. The decisive moment came when Ruben Neves converted the winning penalty, following a crucial save by Portugal’s goalkeeper Diogo Costa against Spain’s Alvaro Morata.
Portugal secured £7 million, roughly KSh 1.2 billion, in prize money. Spain, which had won the 2023 edition, received £5.6 million (around KSh 975 million). By comparison, Spain earned €8 million (KSh 1.1 billion) for winning Euro 2024. The maximum possible earnings in the Nations League tournament can go up to €28 million (KSh 4 billion), depending on team performance throughout the competition.
Portugal’s journey to the 2025 title was impressive. After a lone loss to Denmark in the group stage, they bounced back by defeating Croatia, Poland, and Scotland. They overcame Germany in the semi-finals before clinching the trophy against Spain. This win adds to their previous Nations League triumph in 2019, making Portugal the first country to win the tournament twice. France and Spain had won in 2021 and 2023, respectively.
For Cristiano Ronaldo, this was a meaningful comeback after tough exits in the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. Speaking to UEFA, Ronaldo described the win as “special” and highlighted the pride of winning for his country. He also praised his teammates, calling them a “young and very competitive team” capable of taking on any opponent.
Looking ahead, the next UEFA Nations League cycle begins with the draw for the 2026/27 edition in early 2026. The league matches will be played in September, October, and November of that year, with quarter-finals in March 2027, playoffs in March 2028, and the finals scheduled for June 2028.
