Albert Ojwang was booked into Central Police Station in Nairobi at exactly 2:35 a.m., according to the Occurrence Book. Just one hour and ten minutes later, at 3:45 a.m., his death was recorded by two officers. Now, CCTV footage and other evidence are helping investigators piece together the timeline of events that led to his death while in police custody.

In a report published by Kenyan media, Citizen TV obtained exclusive documents and footage that detail the final moments of Ojwang’s life. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has been present at the station for a second day in a row, working closely with the police to understand what happened inside Cell 3. Authorities are focusing on eight surveillance cameras installed at six key locations inside the station. Four cameras are mounted at the entrance, two facing out and two facing in, while two others monitor the reporting area next to the holding cells. These cameras could provide vital insight into what took place between Ojwang’s booking and his death.

Evidence collected from the holding cell includes a pair of white Crocs stained with blood, a black top with blood marks, a wet maroon sweater, a water bottle, and several plastic drinking containers. Blood stains were found on both the walls and the floor, and investigators noted that water had also been smeared across the cell floor.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja visited the station with his deputies Gilbert Masengeli and Eliud Lagat, alongside the Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations and IPOA’s chairperson. Kanja confirmed that the case is being treated with the highest level of seriousness and that all available footage is under review.

The investigation has also extended into the digital space. One social media account on platform X, believed to belong to a suspect named Kevin who was previously detained at Kamukunji Police Station, has since been deactivated. This move has raised more questions about possible links to the case.

From the family’s perspective, frustration is growing. Meshack Ojwang, a relative, voiced deep concern over why Albert was left alone in the cell. “We just want answers,” he said. “Why was he alone? What happened in that hour?”

In response to mounting public pressure, IG Kanja has interdicted all officers who were on duty during the incident, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation. As the country awaits answers, the focus remains on what happened in Cell 3 during that final hour.
