Mbappe Leads France to Nations League Bronze over Germany

Kylian Mbappé delivered a standout performance as France defeated Germany 2-0 in the UEFA Nations League third-place match held in Stuttgart on Sunday. With a goal and an assist, Mbappé was the difference-maker, showing his class in a French side that featured several changes from their previous match.

Germany had the upper hand in the first half, creating multiple chances and controlling much of the possession. Karim Adeyemi even won a penalty early on, but it was overturned after a VAR check confirmed a dive. Florian Wirtz also came close when his shot hit the post, but the Germans couldn’t find the back of the net.

Mbappé gave France the lead just before half-time. The forward timed his run perfectly to receive a lofted pass over Joshua Kimmich, took a smooth first touch, and fired the ball past the keeper with his right foot. That goal marked his 50th for France, a milestone that highlights his growing legacy in international football.

France made eight changes from their semi-final loss to Spain, with only Mbappé, goalkeeper Mike Maignan, and Adrien Rabiot retaining their spots in the starting lineup. Despite the rotation, the squad remained sharp and efficient. Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann also switched things up, including a recall for striker Niclas Füllkrug and handing another opportunity to Nick Woltemade, who was later substituted at half-time.

In the second half, Germany thought they had equalized when Deniz Undav scored, but the goal was disallowed due to a foul in the buildup. That missed opportunity proved costly.

As Germany pushed for a goal, they left themselves exposed at the back. In the 84th minute, Robin Koch misplayed a pass at midfield, allowing Mbappé to intercept. He sprinted forward and squared the ball to substitute Michael Olise, who plays club football in Germany. Olise calmly slotted it home to double France’s lead and end the match.
