Kenya’s Prof. Makau Mutua has been recognized as one of the world’s top scholars in 2024, earning global praise for his impressive work in law and human rights.

Prof. Mutua, who currently serves as President William Ruto’s Constitutional Affairs Advisor, was ranked by ScholarGPS, a respected global platform that tracks academic excellence across millions of researchers and institutions. The platform placed him in the top 0.5% of scholars worldwide based on his research, publications, and impact in the academic world.

ScholarGPS sent an official email to Prof. Mutua, applauding his “outstanding performance” and “strong publication record.” The ranking was drawn from a huge database of over 30 million scholar profiles and more than 120,000 institutions, making this a major accomplishment.

In the 2024 rankings, Prof. Mutua was ranked 295th globally in General Law and 46th in Human Rights. These are competitive fields filled with thousands of experts, so his placement highlights just how influential his work has been over the years.

ScholarGPS divides top scholars into two categories. The first group is Highly Ranked Scholars, who are in the top 0.05% worldwide. The second, where Prof. Mutua was placed, is Top Scholars, making up the top 0.5%. Both groups represent the best minds in global academia.

This latest honour adds to an already impressive career. Prof. Mutua is a former Dean at the University at Buffalo Law School and was a long-time professor at SUNY Buffalo Law in the United States.
