Liverpool’s talented goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is finally getting his big chance to shine, and it won’t be at Anfield. The 26-year-old Irish keeper is close to sealing a move to Brentford in a deal that could be worth up to £18 million ($24 million), according to reports that broke on Sunday.
Kelleher has spent most of his Liverpool career as the backup to Brazilian star Alisson Becker. While he has delivered solid performances whenever called upon, opportunities have been limited. During the recent season, he played in 10 Premier League matches when Alisson was sidelined by injury. But that wasn’t enough for a player hungry for regular first-team football.
Brentford has reportedly agreed to pay an initial £12.5 million for Kelleher. The fee could increase to £18 million depending on performance bonuses and other clauses in the deal. With only one year left on his Liverpool contract, Kelleher felt it was the right time to take on a new challenge.
He wasn’t short on options either. Leeds United, West Ham, and Bournemouth were all said to be interested, but Brentford seems to have won the race. The timing is perfect, too. Brentford’s current first-choice goalkeeper, Mark Flekken, is set to leave the club for Bayer Leverkusen in Germany. That creates a clear path for Kelleher to step in and make the position his own.

Liverpool fans will surely remember Kelleher’s heroics in cup competitions. In 2022, he was the star of the League Cup final against Chelsea, pulling off key saves and even scoring a penalty in a thrilling 11-10 shootout victory.
He was trusted again in the 2024 League Cup final, once again starting against Chelsea and helping Liverpool lift the trophy.
As he heads to west London, Liverpool is also making moves. The Reds have lined up Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili as Kelleher’s replacement. The Georgian shot-stopper had already agreed to join Liverpool and is expected to be part of Arne Slot’s squad for the upcoming season.
For Kelleher, the move to Brentford marks a new chapter. After years of waiting behind one of the world’s best goalkeepers, he’s ready to prove himself as a Premier League starter. And for Brentford, it’s a major boost as they look to strengthen their squad with a keeper who’s calm under pressure and proven on big stages.
