The 2025 Kip Keino Classic at Nairobi’s Ulinzi Sports Complex delivered fireworks, especially in the men’s javelin throw. The spotlight belonged to Brazil’s Luiz Mauricio Da Silva, a 25-year-old underdog who stunned the world with a jaw-dropping throw of 86.34 meters, a personal best and meet record!

A New Star is Born
Da Silva wasn’t on many people’s radar heading into the event. But with just one incredible throw, he beat some of the sport’s biggest names. His throw lit up the stadium and got the Nairobi crowd on their feet in celebration. It’s clear Da Silva is now someone to watch on the global athletics stage.
Legends Fall Behind
Germany’s Thomas Röhler, the 2016 Olympic champion, was solid with a throw of 80.79m, good enough for silver. Leandro Ramos from Portugal came in third with 80.68m. Though strong performances, they couldn’t match the magic of Da Silva’s golden toss.

Yego’s Comeback in Progress
Kenya’s very own Julius Yego, famously known for learning javelin by watching YouTube videos, threw his season-best of 78.74m, landing him in fifth place. The 2015 world champion may not have made the podium, but fans were thrilled to see glimpses of his old power and potential. His journey back to top form is one to follow.
What About the Defending Champ?
Belgium’s Timothy Herman, last year’s Kip Keino Classic champion, didn’t have the best day. He finished eighth with a throw of 77.14m. Meanwhile, Grenada’s Anderson Peters, a two-time world champion, placed seventh (77.49m).
