Chelsea have officially won the race to sign highly-rated English striker Liam Delap for a reported £30 million. The talented forward has said yes to join the London giants, turning down strong interest from Manchester United, Everton, and top clubs in Germany and Italy.
The 21-year-old goal machine is set to become Chelsea’s latest signing after the club agreed to activate his release clause. Delap will soon undergo his medical, with final checks to be handled by Ipswich Town, where he spent last season on loan.
This move marks a big step in Chelsea’s summer transfer strategy, adding young, dynamic talent to boost their squad for domestic and European success. Delap was impressed by Chelsea’s long-term vision and the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League, which helped seal his decision.
A key factor in the deal was also manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with Delap during his time at Manchester City’s youth setup. Reuniting with a coach who understands his strengths made Chelsea’s offer even more appealing.
Delap, the son of former Premier League player Rory Delap, enjoyed a breakout season on loan at Ipswich Town. He scored crucial goals, delivered smart assists, and played a key role in helping the team push for promotion. His sharp movement, strong finishing, and high work rate caught the attention of several top European clubs, but it was Chelsea’s project that convinced him.
Despite being a Manchester City player, the Premier League champions will not activate their buy-back clause, confirming their decision to let the youngster go permanently.
With over 40 senior appearances and a growing number of goals and assists, he is seen as one of the brightest young English strikers. At Chelsea, he will be hoping to continue his development under Maresca’s guidance and compete for a starting spot in a squad full of emerging talent.
